Cuttle Mill

HISTORY

As the name suggests, it was originally a water mill with the two spring fed lakes above the house feeding the mill, the machinery for which is still preserved within the house itself. In the early 70's it was set up as a carp fishery by Albert Brewer who turned it into one of the first managed day ticket carp waters in the UK. Certainly, as teenagers growing up in Kent, we devoured articles in the angling press about the lakes and dreamed of fishing there but alas, it was just too far to cycle on our pushbikes.  After Albert passed away, it was bought by the Higgins family who owned and ran the fishery until 2013 when it was compulsorily purchased by HS2 because the proposed route for the high speed rail between London and Birmingham cut through the edge of the property. Today the plans for the railway have changed a little and the track has been moved about 100m further away from the lakes than originally planned. At the time of writing, at the beginning of 2020, there is much debate about the escalating cost of this project. Who knows what will happen?
